ASU ADVOCACY

Advocacy at the Acadia Students’ Union

Advocacy is one of the core responsibilities of the Acadia Students’ Union (ASU). The ASU works to ensure that students’ voices are represented in decisions that affect their academic experience, student life, financial wellbeing, and overall quality of life and student experience.

Our advocacy work happens at four different levels: institutional, municipal, provincial, and federal. Each level focuses on different decision-makers and policies that impact students.

Institutional Advocacy

Institutional advocacy refers to the work the ASU does within Acadia University.

The ASU represents students in university governance structures and works directly with university leadership to address issues affecting students on campus.

This includes:

  • Representing students on Acadia University Senate and committees

  • Advocating for fair academic policies and evaluation practices

  • Addressing concerns related to tuition, academic regulations, and student services

  • Working with administration on campus policies, accessibility, and student wellbeing

  • Bringing forward student concerns and feedback to university leadership

Through institutional advocacy, the ASU ensures students have a seat at the table when decisions are made about their education.

Municipal advocacy focuses on issues that affect students in the Town of Wolfville and the surrounding community. Students are a significant part of the local population, and many decisions made by the municipality directly affect student life.

The ASU works with municipal leaders to advocate for:

  • Affordable and accessible student housing

  • Transportation in Wolfville

  • Community safety and bylaw policies

  • Student representation in town decision-making

  • Strengthening relationships between students and local residents

By working with the municipality, the ASU helps ensure that the needs of students living in Wolfville are considered in local policy decisions.
