ASU
Divestment Initiative
In March 2020, the Student Representative Council passed a motion to divest (meaning our remove all financial investments) from the “Oil & Gas” and “Mining & Metals” sectors, as they are known to cause direct harm to the environment. The rationale behind this successful motion was that many students did not want their union dues invested in industries that are harmful to their future.
A policy outlining requirements for responsible divestment was developed to provide guidance to the ASU. Divestment guidance is outlined in the ASU Investment Policy. . Roughly $80,000 of the ASU’s capital was moved from investments in the extractive sector, to investments in renewable energy.
