ASU Sustainability

The ASU is committed to environmental sustainability and has demonstrated this through establishing multiple initiatives to advance this cause. Whether it's food and drink, student governance, or how we invest our money, sustainability guides us every step of the way.

Initiatives on Campus

ASU Divestment Initiative

In March 2020, the Student Representative Council passed a motion to divest (meaning our remove all financial investments) from the “Oil & Gas” and “Mining & Metals” sectors, as they are known to cause direct harm to the environment

Fair Trade Campus

Acadia University became the first  Fair Trade Campus in the Maritimes in 2017 with the support of the Acadia Students’ Union.

Sustainable Development

Goals Accord (SDG Accord)

The SDG Accord is a statement of support for the UNSDGs by higher education institutions around the world.

Acadia Community Farm

Students play a significant role helping to grow food for the dining hall and local food bank. Each season a student Farm Coordinator is hired, and the ASU provides grants from the Wellness Fund to support the Farm.

The ASU established the elected position of Sustainability Officer in 2015 at the request of students. The position was created to serve as a voice for sustainability on the SRC, to engage students about important sustainability matters, and to advance sustainability initiatives in the ASU.

ASU Sustainability Representative

Food security is a sustainability issue and sustainable development goal. The ASU signed the SDG Accord in 2019. Global Goal #2.1 is this:

By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations (like students) , including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.
